Tortillas To Go

6 12 2006

The roads in Southern New Mexico can be pretty lonely. When Las Cruces, population 82,671, is the big city that doesn’t leave many people for the small towns. My family was recently traveling cross country and found ourselves in need of some evening nourishment in the small town of Alamogordo (here’s your trivia for the day: the English translation would is “Fat Cottonwood”). This town’s claim to fame is that it is near White Sands National Monument, White Sands Missile Range, and the Trinity Site (no, not a religious site but the site of the first a-bomb test). It also happens to be home to a lot of Chinese restaurants (I’m sure there is an interesting story here but I didn’t stay long enough to find out).

However, being in New Mexico we found our way to a busy little New Mexican joint in the heart of this small town called Tortillas To Go. This unassuming restaurant’s parking lot was almost filled to capacity-pretty good for a Wednesday night. There was no menu outside so we slowly entered not knowing what to expect. It turns out that we were going to be pleasantly surprised this evening. First is the smell-any New Mexican restaurant worth it’s chilies is going to have a tangy aroma and Tortillas To Go sure did. Next was the special board – kids meals for $1.99 – can’t beat that unless it’s a kids-eat-free night. (do any places still do these?)

The food was exciting as the prices. Bethany and I split a huge enchilada plate with rice and beans. Sure the toppings blended together some, but each was still distinctively New Mexican, full of flavor and heat. To top it all off they were serving horchata, or agua fresca, for only 99 cents! Wow! If you’ve never had this drink before it can come in all varieties but the best are milk based with a hefty helping of cinnamon served over a tall glass of ice. It’s not usually served as a desert but that’s how we finished our delightfully tasty meal off in the little desert town of Alamogordo, New Mexico.

By the way, the total bill, including tax and tip, was less than $20.
